ADF (Aerosol Dispensing Forum) and PCD (Packaging of Perfume, Cosmetics & Design) New York announced the winners of the Innovation Awards at an Awards Ceremony during the show last week. The Innovation Awards, now in their second year, recognize outstanding achievements and encourage the industry to push the boundaries with technological and creative innovations in aerosol, dispensing, personal care and cosmetic packaging. Show director Christelle Anya and master of ceremonies Paul Austin of Austin Advisory Group presented trophies to the winners. Stan Platek, vice president & general manager at Ball Corporation, accepted the ADF award for best industrial & technical suppliers’ application for the L’Oréal Men Expert can. Ball’s “ReAl” aerosol container technology utilizes recycled aluminum to create a metal alloy that exhibits increased strength and accommodates weight reduction of the container without affecting package integrity. Platek said, “It’s a great honor to be recognized for our commitment to sustainability, and we applaud L’Oréal for their commitment as well. This product proves that you can have beautiful and environmentally sustainable packaging that is also cost-effective. It’s a win-win for everyone and something that we are going to see more of.” Award recipient Scott Carpenter, Vice President & Partner Innovation, co-accepted the ADF Award for Personal Care Innovation for the development of Coppertone Whipped Lotion, powered by Formulated Solutions’ eN2Fused platform technology. Carpenter said, “As a healthcare-focused innovation development and manufacturing company, receiving an innovation award in personal care is particularly rewarding. It speaks to the diligence we place on the consumer experience and the intimacy our products play in their daily lives. Our mission is to make products that consumers love to use, and this recognition is proof positive that we are delivering on that goal.” The judges included Lorraine Keyes-Ahart, Clinique Global Package Development at Estée Lauder Companies; Ian Nicholson, worldwide director of strategic innovation & technology alliances at Colgate Palmolive; Eric O’Toole, Associate Professor of Package Design, Pratt Institute; Bernard Quennessen, vice president of Packaging Concept Development at Coty; Marianne Rosner Kilmchuck, chairperson, Packaging Design Department, Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT); and Ryan Young, director of packaging – hair care/aerosol at L’Oreal. Impressed with the quality of submissions this year, Colgate-Palmolive’s Nicholson said, “The award submissions are great examples of creative companies seeking to better meet the needs of their users, which is essential in delivering superior business results.” Clinique’s Keyes-Ahart commented on the judging process, saying, “It was very exciting to see the many innovations in materials, design, manufacturing methods, and decoration up for consideration for awards this year.” THE WINNERS See the products in this Slideshow ADF Personal Care – 2-way tie COPPERTONE Whipped Lotion Sunscreen The whipped formula took years to develop, Coppertone’s marketing director, sun care, told Happi in the feature, Special Delivery.
